“Silver” 2014 Toyota 4Runner Overland Build

A perfect balance between capability, reliability, and maneuverability.

Say hello to one of the most tested and tried 4Runners in the world…

Build Videos and Parts List (Below)

New Life for Silver

We were building “Silver” long before this whole YouTube thing kicked off so there’s no tidy video list of the progress as there is with Aspen. So, we’ll kick this overland build page off with the latest modifications to our 2014 Toyota 4Runner instead!

Where it REALLY got crazy

Back in 2018 we got a wild idea… sell it all and hit the road! Before we could take off though, it was time to take Silver to the next level. In this episode we began investigating how the storage could be improved and added a fresh SnoMaster dual zone fridge to the mix to replace the ARB that wasn’t exactly impressing us.

Bit by Bit

Our progress continues as the weight of the logistics for full time overland travel begin to bear down on us. Fresh solar power and routine maintenance get taken care of.

Homeless?

Shade for Silver gets installed with a 180 degree awning as we sell our home (5th wheel camper) and move the last bits of our belongings into the Turtleback Expedition. This last night was a bit surreal as what we had embarked on began to feel real.

Lessons Were Learned

We dig through all our “junk” after 9 months on the road and share what came in handy and what should have been left behind.

A Place for Everything

We whip up a DIY storage system for the 4Runner to help tame the gear pile. While it was very basic, it’s still going strong to this day (4.5 years later). You’ll see some lessons learned from this setup in the newer storage system we build in Aspen.

Fuel for Days

The first Long Range Automotive tank to be installed in a 4Runner… netting 56 gallons of go-juice! This prototype was put through it’s paces and a list of refinements passed back to Australia for the newer 24 gallon configuration. Hanging out with the team at Tactical Application Vehicles never gets old and we had a blast with this install.

Fresh Kings and New Tank

The tired old Icons get replaced with a custom-tuned King suspension by Walt and Crew at TAV early in the episode. Followed by the culmination of our Long Range Automotive fuel tank testing process with the swap to the updated (and lower profile) 24 gallon auxiliary fuel tank.
